Most schools do not have the space to create a relaxation room, but you may like to create a relaxation corner or table.
Having an area which is dedicated to relaxation can really help the calm even if it is small.
One school asked each child to bring in a towel and all the children sit on their towel representing their personal space.
Children took that small towel home and were able to go to their special place and re-create the calm feelings experienced in the class.
You could try carpet squares, pieces of bright material, cushions. Alternatively you could give each child a piece of sugar paper and ask them to colour their own magic carpet. Children can sit on their magic carpet when they relax.
You might like to decorate a low table with objects that are inspiring and calming. Include pictures of the sea and flowers, mood or star affirmation cards, shells, flowers etc Use soft colours to induce a feeling of calm.
Spraying lavender into the air also creates a feeling of serenity and calm. Use a clean spray bottle and put a drop of lavender oil in water.Make sure you change the water regularly.
Once you have set up your relaxing corner, it maybe that you ask the children to gather here silently after breaks and lunch or in the morning. This is an idea place for children to listen to the Relax Kids CDs.
If there isn't space for a relaxation corner, you could make a relaxation wall. Place posters such as the Relax Kids star poster, positive affirmation and relaxation exercises and tips.
