Goal setting for teens and adults

Here are 10 steps to achieving your goals

1 Make a commitment to the goal and write it down.  The more you remind yourself of your goal, the better chance you have of sticking to that goal.

2 Give your goal a time frame and make a note of what reward you will have when you achieve your goal.

3 Close your eyes and imagine that you have achieved your goal.  Imagine how you feel.

4 Share your goal with a friend.  It is much easier to do it with someone.

5 Break the big goal down into small chunks so it doesn't seem impossible.

6 Work on each chunk and note all achievements down in a log book.

7 Repeat your daily affirmations.  They need to be in the first person, present tense and positive. 'I am ..........'  'Today I am ......'

8 Manage your motivation and set backs.  Slipping and falling back is easy and what can be difficult is picking yourself up and get on with it again.

9 Continue to treat yourself along the way to keep yourself motivated.

10 Make sure you spend time each day relaxing as you work towards your goals so you don't feel stressed and under pressure.

Here is a relaxation exercise to help you achieve your goals

Sit comfortably on the sofa or lie on your bed.  Close your eyes and take in a deep breath and breathe all the way out.  Start by relaxing the muscles in your feet and legs and slowly work up your whole body until you are completely relaxed.  Bring your attention to your breathing.  Feel your stomach rising and falling as you breathe in and out slowly.  Count your breaths and as you breathe out, say the number of the breath. This will help you focus and stay relaxed.

Continue to stay in this position for 10 - 15 minutes and more if you have the time.
